Poppy: Opium Red Organic Seed

1000 Organic Red Opium Poppy Seeds [approx]

Name: Poppy: Opium Red

Latin Name: Papaver somniferum

Plant Type: Annual

Plant Height: 90-110 cm

Description: Red Opium Poppy produces vibrant red petals with a distinctive dark, almost black, center. The flowers bloom for a short time, and then they are replaced by their large seed heads.

In late summer/Autumn, their seed heads can be removed and shaked around the garden to spread the seed for the following year. Red Opium Poppy can grow to be over 1 metre tall.

Seed Origin: Netherlands

Sowing: April to May.......September to October.

Flowering: June to August

Plant Height: 90-110 cm

How To Grow Red Opium Poppy From Seed: Sow poppy seeds directly into the spot in the garden where they are to grow. Sprinkle the seeds thinly into a prepared shallow drill, and cover lightly with soil. Keep the area moist until germination has occurred.

When the seedlings establish, thin them to leave roughly 25cm between each plant. Keep the strongest of the seedlings. The plants can grow over 1 metre in height. Each plant will produce many flowers, each flower only lasting a few days.

Alternatively, sow the seed in large pots. Try not to transplant poppies, as they don’t take well to this.

Red Opium Poppy is a great source of pollen for honey bees. Butterflies also adore this beautiful flower.

Seed count is approximate.
